    47. Tramblie (Tremblay)Family

The name Tramblie (as used in our line) has been distorted in many records. The original French spelling appears to be Tremblay.  Various other spellings have been recorded.  Probably the two most outstanding distortions are found; in the U.S. Census of Janesville, Rock Co. , WI (M 432, roll 1005, p. 245, dwelling # 220) where it was spelled Trumbie, and; in the Albany, Green Co., WI marriage records of Philip Tramblie and Hannah E. Andrus (Andrews in this record) where it is spelled Tranellie.

Needless to say, finding these records consumed many hours of page by page research seeking everything that even came close looking for clues of their existence in the area.  The deed to the grave site found in old family papers became the only clue as to the final resting place of Philip for no other record could be located placing him within hundreds of miles of where he died.

Because of the multitude of problems finding information, all of the important, and some not so important, found on the Tramblie Family is included here to preserve the record of the past.

Reaching back as far as possible at this time we find one Jacques Tremblay born ca. 1500, died ca. 1554 and having at least one son.

And Ends His Life by Shooting
            Himself with a Pistol on
                Tuesday Afternoon.
                     __________

       The Chicago Times of yesterday
      printed the following dispatch:
         Wichita, Kan., December 24th-

Jonas Tramblie, 75 years old, shot him-
self through the temple this afternoon
and died instantly.    Worry of mind
was probably the cause.   The old man
professed to be something of a spiritual-
ist.   He had been divorced from four
wives and at the time of his death was
living with a fifth,  and at the instigata-
tion of the spirits was keeping a house-
keeper,  who had just entered suit
against him for $10,000 for betrayal.
The deceased had some good prop-
erty in the city and yesterday, it seems,
he made transfer of it to the woman
now holding the name of his wife, through it
appears that Tramblie had no divorce
from a former partner before he married
No. 5 a year ago.  He transacted some
business this morning. ate dinner at
home, and finished, remarking, "It is
about over." In half an hour Mrs. Tram-
ble heard the pistol shot and ran out to
find the old man dead in and outhouse.
For years deceased resided in this city.
He was a shoemaker by trade, and did
business on North Main street, residing
at 215 North Bluff Street. Here he raised
a large family, removing to Kansas about
fifteen years ago.  Learning of his end,
his two sons, Mr. Jonas Tramblie, of
Rockford, and Lewis Tramblie of this
city, started for Wichita this morning to
render such assistance as might be in
their power.  The old man is kindly re-
membered by a large number in this city,
and his unfortunate suicide will be a
      great surprise to all.

He received a pension and on Jun. 1, 1899 made an application for an increase in his pension.  He lived in DePere, WI, Chicago, IL, Rockford, IL & Janesville, WI where he died.  Some excerpts from an article in the Janesville Daily Gazette of June 9, 1934 by John F. Dooley give an insight to his life's experiences.  Hearing of the Govt. hiring of young men to drive mule teams, he ran away from home and went to St. Louis, MO, determined to help in some way or other.  Here he worked driving teams that hauled the supplies to the Army.  He soon returned home and enlisted for three months being sent to Chicago to guard war prisoners.

Returning home and still too young to be in the Army he still wanted to serve and finally enlisted in the then forming 8th. Regt. (known as the Old Eagle Regt. for it's mascot, which went everywhere with them.) under Capt. W. B. Britton.  Without training of any kind they embarked for Vicksburg, VA.  Their first taste of war occurred at Meridian (back of Vicksberg) where they destroyed a large ammunition factory, thus starting the Great Red River campaign.  Among the 32 battles that followed their eights months stay at Vicksberg were: Monsula Prairie, Fort Dureso, Gun Town, Alexandria, Nakatosh, Memphis, Nashville and Mobile, where they laid siege to a Spanish Fort for 18 days and nights, finally crossing the river on a temporary bridge of collapsible boats and planks.  The following charge brought about the fall of the City of Mobile.

What, you might wonder, did they carry with them from battle to battle? An Enfield, muzzle loading rifle weighing 19 pounds, a knapsack, a harvest sack for rations and a canteen. The hardest part to understand is how many of them made it home during the war to get married.
