    43. Steele Family


         John Steele, progenitor of the family in America is first found in Cambridge, Middlesex Co. , MA in 1632/3 and was the brother of George Steele.  John became freeman May 14, 1634 and was a representative in March 1634 and on the next two courts.  In 1636 he was appointed with Ludlow, Pynchon and others to administer the government over the Great Exodus to Connecticut (which continued two to three years).  He was often a Representative from the first assembly 1639-1657.  He served as Town Clerk of Harvard until 1645 at which time he moved to Farmington.
     
    JOHN STEELE, it is said came from County Essex, England.  He married (1) in England, Rachel Falcott who died in 1653.

      Samuel, born 1626/7, married Mary, daughter of Hon. James Boosey
      LYDIA
      , born ca. 1628
      Mary, born ca. 1630, married William Judd, son of Thomas Judd.
      John Jr., born ca. 1633, married Mercy Warner & died 1653/4
      Hannah, born ca. 1635, died 1655 probably unmarried.
      Sarah, born 1638, married Thomas, Judd Jr. and died 1695
      Daniel, born Apr. 29, 1645, died 1646
    John married (2) Nov. 23, 1655 Mary, widow of Richard Seymore.  He died
    1664/5 and his will dated Jan. 20, 1664 lists wife Mary; son, Samuel; two
    sons-in-law, William & Thomas Judd; and the three children of his
    deceased son, John, and  also Rachel the daughter of Samuel.

    LYDIA STEELE, born ca. 1628, married Mar. 31, 1657, James Bird of Hartford, in Farmington, MA.
