    36. Knapp Family

     

         This Family line is presently under revision. 

         The Knapp family originated in the Province of  Saxony, Germany.  The English branch of the family was located in County Sussex as early as the 15th. Century.  In 1540 Roger Knapp distinguished himself at a tournament held at Norfolk, England and was specially honored by Henry V and granted a Coat of Arms.  In 1630, two members of Knapp families: Nicholas and  William, came to America. In 1638 two more, Roger (who settled in Conn.) and Aaron came.

    WILLIAM KNAPP, born 1578 Sussex, England, died Aug. 30, 1659 Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA.  He was a carpenter and a Proprietor of Watertown, married in England Priscilla _____?

    AARON KNAPP, born (? Yorkshire?) England, ca. 1612, and his wife, Elizabeth, came to America  in 1638 and settled in (Cohannet) Taunton, Bristol Co., MA, died before 1676.  He and his wife are said to be the  American ancestors of this branch of the family.

    ABIAL (ABEAL) KNAPP, born Sep. 3, 1738 Norton,  Bristol Co., MA, died May 25, 1832 Lyman, Grafton Co., NH, interred The Center Cemetery, Lyman, moved to Lyman in 1781.  He served in the Revolutionary War in John Houghton's Co., Col. Babelion's Regt. until Sep. 22, 1776 and enlisted for three years, May 9, l777 in Capt. Nicholas Gilman's Co. being released Jan. 10, 1778. He did not receive his pay until Jun. 2, 1780 on an order of the court dated Dec. 28, 1779.  He married probably in Norton on Jun. 9, 1766 to Keziah Cheney.

    ELIJAH KNAPP, born Jan. 1769, ( Norton, MA, or Richmond, NH) died Dec. 19, 1860 at age 91 years, 9 mos., interred The Center Cemetery, Lyman, Grafton Co., NH, married Sep. 29, 1796, Sally Elliott, born ca. 1775/6, died Apr. 10, 1868 age 92, interred with her husband.

    IRA OSCAR KNAPP, born Jun. 7, 1839 Lyman, Grafton Co., NH, died 1910, married May 1, 1866 Flavia F.  Stickney, born Feb. 8, 1849, died Mar. 16, 1898 in Lyman, the daughter of Ethan Franklin Stickney and Laura A. Hastings
    (See Stickney Family Addendum).

         Ira and Flavia were both graduates of the Metaphysical College, Boston and Class Taught by Mary Baker Eddy.  Ira was a member of the Christian Science Bible Lesson Committee and First Chairman of the Board of Directors of the First Church of Christian Science.  Flavia was a member of the Board of Missionaries, Board of Education and a Teacher of Christian Science.  Ira was a very close confidant of Mary Baker Eddy, Founder of Christian Science.  Mrs. Eddy gave, in Dec. 1889, a tract of land in Boston to Ira to hold for the future erection of the Mother Church.  This tract of land was worth $ 20,000.00 in 1892.

    BLISS KNAPP, born Jun. 7, 1877, Lyman, Grafton Co., NH, died Mar. 14, 1958, interred Cambridge, MA, married Mar. 27, 1918 Eloise Mabury of Los Angeles, CA,  daughter of Hiram Mabury.   

       He was a noted Lecturer of Christian Science.  It was through letters he wrote and conversations with members of our family that the Bartlett Family line was discovered.
