    29. Hinds Family

The progenitor of the Hinds: family (spelled variously as Hains, Haines, Hynds, Haynes & Hindes in the records) came to America about or shortly before 1637 when first mention of him is made in Salem, MA.  The First Congregational Church there records him as a member Dec. 25, 1637.

JAMES HINDS, born England, died (Southold Town records) before Nov. 9, 1655 (his will dated Mar. 1, 1652 and inventoried on the date in 1655), married Mary Knight, the daughter of John & Ann Knight of Newbury, MA who arrived in Boston June 3, 1635 on the ship "James".   John Knight died in Newbury, MA Feb. 27, 1677.  Mary Knight Hinds married (2) after May 26 (probably in June) 1656, Ralph Dayton of Southold, MA.

JOHN HINDS, baptized Aug. 28, 1639 Salem, MA, died soon after Mar. 9, 1720 (date of his will which indicates he was quite sick) in Lancaster, Worchester Co., MA, married (1)(name not recorded) and had:
    One son:
      James.

He married (2) Feb. 9, 1682 Lancaster, MA, Mary, widow of James Butler of Lancaster.  It is thought James Hinds first went to Woburn, then to Lancaster and then to Brookfield.  It was in Brookfield that he was granted 62 acres of land; another 137 acres out of town along the Nashaway River and along a brook that crossed James Butler's land; and another piece South East of Rattlesnake Hill.  In April 1704 he served under John Moore at the garrison in Lancaster.

John Hinds started his family in Lancaster and stayed there until 1719 at which time he moved to Brookfield.  Two of his children later married into our Bartlett branch of the family.  On Jan. 23, 1728 he was appointed to the committee (of 5) to divide the Town of Brookfield into 4 sections.  He built a mill on Horse Pond Brook in 1738 and later sold it to his son Seth.  July of 1738 was not good to John and Ann for they lost three of their children that month.  He served as a garrison guard in Brookfield and received for his services 40 acres of hilly land and 20 acres of bottom or meadow land.  He also served in Captain Thomas Buckminister's Company in Aug. 1748 and went to garrison  at Fort Dunner.
