JOHN DEANE I, of Dorchester, Dorset, England
in 1636, came from Chard, Somerset, England and settled in the
area of Cohannet, New Plymouth (later incorporated on March 3,
1639 as Taunton, MA) about 1637 and was admitted freeman Dec. 4,
1638. He married Alice ____? of whom no more is known. His
will was dated Apr. 25, 1660, he died before (May?) Jun. 7,
1660, the date his will was proved. One of the first purchasers
of Taunton. It appears in the Proprietor Records that he
received 12 shares of land.

In the land division of 1641 of Taunton,
for 1 Pound, 8 Shillings, 10 Pence, he received 8 heads and 76
acres. In 1643 he is listed in Captain Pool's Company as one of
the men of Taunton able to bear arms in the Colony of New
Plymouth.

JOHN DEANE II, of Taunton, MA, called the
first english child born there about 1639, died Jul. 9, 1692 in
Taunton, married Nov. 7, 1663 Taunton, Bristol Co., MA (also
listed as happening on the same date in Bridgewater, Plymouth
Co.) Sarah Edson who died Feb. 18, 1717 at about age 77, the
daughter of Samuel Edson and Susanna Orcutt of Bridgewater
(See
Edson Family
Addendum).
On Jun. 3, 1662 he is listed as one of the purchasers of
land from the Indians, and on Nov. 26, 1672, one of the
purchasers of what was called the 'South Purchase' from Philip
Sachem of Taunton. On July 9, 1689 he received a Quit Claim
Deed in the 'North Purchase'.
