The family originated in France but the exact location is
not known. The father of the immigrants was Theodore Agrippa d '
Aubigne . "The Old Confessor," born Jul. 25, 1609. His sons:
John, whose descendants went north to Massachusetts.
CORNELIUS d'AUBIGNE who came to Virginia via Wales
about 1685/6.
They were Huguenots and with many other Protestantsfled
France to England, Holland, Germany and America to escape the
terrible persecutions that followed the Revocation of the Edict
of Nantes (Oct. 1685) by Louis XIV.
CORNELIUS d'AUBIGNE ( DAUBENEY), came to America and settled on
the South side of the Pamunky River near Piping Tree Ferry. He
had land grants at Manakin, New Kent Co., VA. Born 1640 in
France, died ca. 1701 in Virginia, married Susanna _____?who
died in 1724. Children:
CORNELIUS (or CORNEILLE), born 1686 Mary, born Jan. 22, 1688 King & Queens Co., VA, married
Major Thomas Carr II (1679-1738) (See Carr Family Addendum).
CORNEILLE DABNEY, born 1686 Hanover Co., VA, died 1764 probably
in Hanover Co., married (2) Sarah Jennings. The name of his
first wife that bore his only son is not known. His son: GEORGE DABNEY, born in Hanover Co., VA, died 1778 in
VA, wife unknown. Children:
George Jr. John, born 1724, died 1818, married Ann Harris
WILLIAM, born 1725/30 Sarah, married William Winston
WILLIAM DABNEY, born 1725/30 probably in Hanover Co., VA,
died 1750, held property on the South Anna River in Hanover, Louisa
Co., VA. Known as "William of Aldringham," He married Susanna
Barrett who died before 1775, the daughter of the Rev. Barrett of
William and Mary College. Children:
George, born 1744, died 1824, married Elizabeth Price Charles, born 1745, died 1830 unmarried
SAMUEL, born 1747 Robert (Robin), married Barbara Winston Elizabeth, married William Morris Susanna, died unmarried.
SAMUEL DABNEY SR., born 1747, resided in Louisa Co., VA,
married Jane Meriwether, born Apr. 8, 1757, the daughter of Thomas
Meriwether (1714-1756) and an Aunt of Meriwether Lewis who with Col. Clark
made the expedition to the mouth of the Colombia River 1804/6.
Jane raised her children assisted by her brother-in-law, Col. Charles
Dabney after Samuel died. They lived in Cub Creek, VA.

DR. SAMUEL DABNEY JR., married (1) Mildred Hopson of Caswell. Co., NC, the daughter of John & Mary (Polly) Hopson. John served
as an Ensign in the Salsibury District Regiment of North
Carolina in the Revolutionary War. Children:
SAMUEL HOPSON A daughter, married a Rivers of Puducah, KY A daughter, married a Rivers ( bro. of above)
After his wife died, Dr. Samuel moved to Montgomery Co.,
TN near Clarksville and married (2) Jane Harrison. Children:
Lucy, married a Smith of Clarksville, TN Margaret, married Calvin F, Vance of Memphis Edmund, Physician in Rirtgold, TN Louisa, married Geroge Francis Dabney of DeSoto, MS (her
cousin)
SAMUEL HOPSON DABNEY M.D., married Dec. 8, 1829 Cordilia
Lewis Minor, born May 4, 1810, died Mar. 12, 1843 (had beautiful
red curls), the daughter of Dabney Minor Jr. (1799-1822) (See
Minor Family Addendum.) Children:
Mary Ann, married Thomas Cottrell (They had Mary Grover
Cottrell who married Dr. James W. Gray as his first wife.)
CORDILIA LEWIS DABNEY, born 1838 TN, died Jul. 31, 1895, married
Dr. James W. Gray (1822-1907) as his second wife. (See
