MATHEW BARTLETT I, baptized, Jul.
8, 1728, born on the "Hooker Farm" , Brookfield , Worcester Co. , MA,
died after 1776 on the Hooker Farm, married ca. 1751 to Susanna Hinds,
born Dec. 12, 1733, died 1819, the daughter of John Hinds & Anna Corliss.

Mathew was a Private in Captain Nathaniel Woolcott's Company and
marched to the relief of Fort William Henry Aug. 9, 1757; in Captain
Obediah Cooley's Company, Sep. 20 to Nov. 24. 1756 who attempted to
destroy the Forts at Crown Point and Niagara; and enlisted in Captain
Jonathan Barnes's Company of Colonel Jonathan Warner's Regiment. A
family tale states "Grandpa Bartlett was the strongest man in the
Revolutionary War. He could walk the length of a regiment with a cannon
ball in each outstretched hand." Wow! (Handed down through many
generations)

Mindwell Bartlett is interred in The Center Cemetery, Lyman, NH with
Mathew and their children. Mathew left Brookfield (possibly after his
first wife died) and settled in the town of Winchester, Cheshire Co., NH
in late 1793 or early 1794. On Apr. 9, 1794 he purchased from his
brother, Reuben Bartlett, land on the Old Northfield Road for £ 17 and
received the following deed. Copied verbatim at Keene, Cheshire Co.
, NH, from the Book of Deeds (126 p. 515/16.)

The land records also show that Mathew sold this piece of property on
Aug. 19. 1807 to Major Isaiah Moody for the sum of two hundred dollars
and the deed was signed by both Mathew and Mindwell Bartlett. He bought
from Nathan Collins three pieces of land upon one of which stood a house
which is believed to be where he lived. These last three pieces of land
were sold in 1818 and the deed is copied below. Other deeds were sold
in 1814, Jul. 1, 1817 and Aug. 9, 1820 the last date recorded of Mathew
being in Winchester. One of these pieces of property was purchased Jan.
31. 1815.

Rec. 16 March 1818 i minute past 12'OClock A 16
Recorded G. Cormine for James Campbell Reg .
On Dec. 24, 1803 (Vol. 1 of Town Records of Winchester) when a new
alignment of the Old Northfield road was to be run 30 rods along his
property, he received $1.50 for damages to his property.
Mathew took an interest in his religion and when in 1804 the Town
Meeting selected one Rev. Experience Porter as pastor of the only church
(Congregational). the inhabitants of the town issued a protest to the
Selectmen of the town signed by 119 people. Among those signing this
protest were Mathew Bartlett, Reuben Bartlett and Elisha Knapp.
(See Knapp Family
Addendum)
On Jan. 5, 1810 the citizens having conceded it was unjust to levy a
tax for maintenance of religious observances as were objectionable to
them, protested against the tax. A warrant was introduced to equalize
the privileges of the different denominations in the use of the Town
Meeting House and passed.
Mathew appears on the U. S. Census of 1810 in Winchester, Cheshire
Co., NH on p. 121 as having 3 males under 10 (Pliny 9. Mathew III 7,
Pizzaro 4) 1 female under 10 (name unknown), 1 female over 10 (name
unknown) and one female 26-45 (Mindwell 39). In the U. S. Census for
Winchester of 1820. Mathew is not shown. His wife, Mindwell, appears
as head of the household with 1 male 10-16 (Pizzaro 14), 1 male 16-26
(Pliny 19), 2 females under 10 (Bethany 9 & Daphne 6) and 1 female over
45 (Mindwell 49). We do find a Mathew Bartlett living in Hurley. Ulster
Co.. NY with 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26 (? Mathew III 17). 1 male over
45 (Mathew II 51), 1 female 10-16 and 1 female over 45 (Betsy ? now 47
if living). No records could be found in Hurley about this Mathew. The
foregoing is suppositious as to the names but probably not far from
correct. The big question remains. Was our sly old Mathew II raising two
families? Perhaps we shall never know for sure.
We find on a headstone in The Center Cemetery. Lyman. Grafton Co..
NH an inscription that reads:
" MATTHEW BARTLETT
DIED Aug. 13. 1822 in New York AE 52;
Mindwell, wife of Matthew Bartlett
DIED Oct. 14. 1870 AE 99y's,2m's & 7days.
Faith in the promise God has given
We trust we shall meet in Heaven."
With this appetizer for, or of,
thought, I will let the question rest until further data is secured.
The 1830 Census of Lyman, NH shows in the household of Pliny Bartlett a
male 20-30 (Pizzaro), 2 females 15-20 (Bethany 19 & Daphne 16) and a
female 50-60 (Mindwel1 59). It is known that Pizzaro lived all his
life with Pliny and never married. while Bethany and Daphne both married
in 1836.
Children:
A daughter, born ca. 1798,
probably in Winchester, died
young?
Pliny. born 1800
MATHEW III, born Nov. 5, 1803
Pizzaro, born 1806, died Aug. 5, 1882
A daughter, born ca. 1808/9 probably in Winchester,
died young
Bethany, born Apr. 29, 1811
Daphne, born Oct. 4, 1813
The three children that had
families other than Mathew III are shown next to preserve the record.
The record of Mathew III follows his Brother & Sisters.
PLINY BARTLETT. born 1800 in Richmond. Cheshire Co.. NH. died Nov. 23.
1883. interred in The Center Cemetery. Lyman. Grafton Co.. NH. married
(1) Stella Thornton who died Sep. 14. 1870 at age 71. interred near
Pliny. He married (2) Lucinda Titus who lived on his farm as late as
Apr. 1887. Pliny built a house on Road 25 near Lyman in 1841. A great
reader & man of super intellect. he represented Lyman in the State
Legislature and took active interest in public affairs.
In Pliny's will dated Dec. 7. 1882 and proved Dec. 4. 1883 (on file
at Grafton County Court House. North Haverhill. NH) he bequests to each
of his nephews; Caleb Chamberlain. Elliott Chamberlain & Ira 0. Knapp
and his niece Salvina Gunnet one dollar. To his sister Bethany
(Bartlett) Hoskins one dollar, to his brother Mathew one dollar, to
Marcus S. Pirun one hundred forty dollars. to (His adopted daughter)
Emma W. P. (Woodley Powers) Hoskins, wife of James Darwin Hoskins
fifty dollars and the rest of his property to his (2nd.) wife Lucinda (Titus)
Bartlett. Luther B. Hoskins was named executor of his estate. Attached
to the probate record is a receipt for one dollar dated Dec. 18. 1884
and signed by Mathew Bartlett (III). Children:
Emma Portland Woody Powers, born ca.
1832 in VT. married
James Darwin Hoskins. born 1830, the son of Dr. Samuel
Hoskins (1795- 1873) and the grandson of Eli Hoskins and
Rhoda Drake. He helped publish (with Dr . Elkanah Barney
Hoskins. DDS) "Historical Sketches of Lyman, NH". Emma
James moved to Minnesota Territory in 1854, then to, Iowa,
then to California where she died in Los Angeles
John A. Powers. born Jan. 10, 1835 in VT. died Aug. 10, 1863 in
Concord, NH.

Children:
Rhoda D. (possibly Drake), born
Mar.6, 1838 died 1902
Lyman, NH. She wrote letters to Catherine Almina
Bartlett Aylesworth about members of the family from
which some of the data herein was obtained.
(See

Eli Flint, born Sep. 27, 1843, died 1919 in Lyman, NH.
DAPHNE BARTLETT, born Oct. 4, 1813
Winchester, Cheshire Co., NH, died Feb. 4, 1855, married Jan. 21, 1836

of Elijah Knapp & Sally Elliot.
(See Knapp Family
Addendum).
Children:
Ira Oscar, born Jun. 7, 1839
Solome S., born ca. 1837
Arial P., born ca. 1642
MATHEW BARTLETT III, born Nov. 5, 1803
Winchester, Cheshire Co., NH, died Jan. 1, 1902 (age 98) Sparta, Monroe
Co., WI, interred Mt. Hope Cemetery, Sparta, WI, married ca. 1828/9
probably in New York State, Martha Collins, born 1812 possibly in New
Hampshire, died between 1870 & 1880 probably in Minnesota. The only clew
to her parents is in the deed of land that Mathew's father sold, where
it states a Nathan Collins owned the adjacent property.
Mathew moved from Winchester to the area of Littleton, Grafton Co.,
NH where in 1826 he is listed as paying taxes. Probably went to New
York next as his first four children are shown as being born there. The
1830 census shows one Mathew Bartlett residing in Jersey, Stueben Co.,
NY (p. 295). No records could be found in this area about him or his
family. New York records for this period are very poor or non-existent.
Jersey became Orange Township and a part of Schuyler Co. with the town
of Monterey being the closest to where Jersey once was located. On this
census is one male 20-30 years (Mathew 27), one female 20-30 (Martha
only 18) and one female under 5 (name unknown). This is still possibly
our Mathew as the correct ages of women are often found to be wrong.
We find him next in the 1840 census for St. Claire, St. Claire Co.,
MI. Shown is one male 30- 40 (Mathew 37), one female 20-30 Martha 28),
two females 5-10 (Adeline 8 & Elizabeth 6) and one female under 5
(Catherine Almina 2) but the first daughter, shown in Jersey, is
missing and she would be 10 or 11 at this time. This was the birthplace
of Catherine Almina.
The family moves again before 1843 by way of Milwaukee, WI to Eagle
Township, Waukesha Co., WI. In the Wisconsin State Census of June 1,
1846 our Mathew appears with one male and seven females, (Mathew,
Martha, Adeline, Elizabeth, Harriet, Catherine, Martha and Olive). On
the U. S. Census of 1850 (the first year that family member names are
listed) , present in the household are: Mathew 44, Martha 38, E.M. (Elizabeth)
16, H.A. (Harriet) 14, all born in NY, C.A. (Catherine Almina
) 11 born in MI, M.J. (Martha) 7, O. A. (Olive) 5 and
L.A. (Llewelyn) 3, the last three being born in WI. Adeline
married the last part of 1849 so logically is not shown at home.
The County Land Records here show Mathew at last is putting down some
roots and obtaining land. He received a land patent from the U. S.
Government on Jun. 24, 1851 according to the Act of Congress on Apr. 24,
1820. He was granted the N.W. quarter of the S.W. Quarter and the S.W.
quarter of the N.W. Quarter Sections of Section 10, Township 5 Range 17
East in the district of lands subject to sale at Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Territory, containing 80 acres, approved on Aug. 1, 1844 in the name of
President John Tyler. Grantee Deed Book G, p. 39/40 shows a date of Nov.
17, 1841 for both parcels and is probably quite close to the date he
came to Wisconsin. On June 13, 1851 he adds by a special warrant deed
from Chester Loomis, the S.E. quarter of the N.W. Quarter making his
holdings now 120 acres, Book 10, p. 310) On Nov. 25, 1853 he sells by
contract the S.E. quarter of the N.W. Quarter Section (Grantor Deed Book
13, p. 314) and on Feb. 26, 1855 he sells the other two parcels (Grantor
Deed Book 15, p. 607) Mathew is listed as one of the first pioneers of
Eagle Township.
From Eagle he now moves north in the direction of Monroe Co., WI.
The 1860 U.S. Census locates his family at Lafayette (p. 67) Adeline and
Elizabeth are both now married and soon found in this area. Mathew is
now 58, Martha 46, daughter Martha is 18, Olive is 14, Llewelyn is 12,
Franklin shows for the first time as 9 and most likely born in Eagle and
Doodlin age 4 either born along the way north or in the Lafayette area.
As a point of interest: Caleb Sheldon Butts Aylesworth (the future
husband of Catherine Almina) is now living with his brother Porter in
Sparta, just a few miles away. How long the family stayed in this area
is not known for sure but they did move west once more.
Following this wandering family was not easy but finding them once
more in Western Minnesota was accomplished. On April 10, 1866 our
westward bound pioneer obtains another Patent from the U.S. Govt., Lots
3 & 4 of the S.W. quarter of Section 31, Twp. 128, Range 26 are now
his. On May 10, 1866 he obtained one more Patent from the Govt., for
the N.W. Quarter of Section 33, and on July 21, 1871 he obtains yet
another Patent for the N.E. Quarter Sec.
They did not stay here for long but at least left a record of their
presence. On Feb. 22 & 26, 1870 Mathew executes a warrant deed to this
land to his son "Lyewellyn" and on June 23, 1870 Martha gives a Quit
Claim Deed to Llewelyn. That same day he executes a Warranty Deed of
all of the lands to Hans & Christian Larson. Apparently the last one of
the parcels obtained in 1871 was actually bought earlier and the
homestead was proved on this date.
The 1870 U.S. Census for Asakis (Osakis), in Douglas Co.. MN shows
only Mathew 68. Martha 58. Luellyen 22. and Franklin 19. It is assumed
both Martha & Olive have married (or died). Catherine we know has
married in Sparta, but what has happened to Doodlin? No record could be
found of this the youngest son. There is a story in the family that he
was named for the activity of his parents so late in life ---Just
Doodlin ---may he rest in peace!
On another page of this 1870 census is some interesting items about our
pioneer. He had to fill out the long form it seems. He owned 420 acres
worth $ 3.300.00 and another $ 300.00 in implements. He paid out during
the year $ 273.00 in wages; owned 4 horses. 3 milk cows. and two other
cows worth $ 630.00. He harvested that year 632 bushels of spring
wheat, 200 bushels of oats, 26 bushels of barle, 1 bushel of peas and
beans, 30 bushels of Irish potatoes; made 30011 of butter, 15 gallons of
solid milk, 40 tons of hay, 30 gallons of molasses and slaughtered $
50.00 worth of animals for a total estimated value of products of $
1.018.00 and to say the least a real hard years work for one 67 years
old even with two sons to help in those days.
Our next record finds Mathew living with his son "Lewden" (1880
census) at Crystal Lake. Hennepin Co.. MN. Some where along the way
over the last ten years his wife, Martha, died and we loose track of
Franklin. Where did he go from here --- a question which absorbed many
hours but alas it remained unanswered. He received a letter from his
cousin Sylvender Hoskins in Lyman. NH. addressed to him in Otsego.
Wright Co.. MN. (This letter was postmarked in Lisbon. NH a few miles
from Lyman on April 8. 1887 and again in Otsego on April 12, 1887.
Only 4 days (and without airplanes yet.) This letter is in the safe
keeping of the author. How long he was here is another question
unanswered.
Another period of 13 years passes. The census of 1890 was destroyed
preventing a check on his whereabouts until 1900. We find him now back
in Sparta, WI living with his daughter Catherine Almina and her husband
Caleb Sheldon B. Aylesworth. Their son Lewis (Llewelyn) and
daughter Etna get to hear the many stories of Grandpa and his travels
west. The curtain comes down on our enduring pioneer on New Years Day
1902 and he is laid to rest at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Sparta having lived
for 98 years 1 month and 28 days. The grave of this great pioneering
American was left to go unmarked until May 1981 when a stone was placed
to give him credit for his many years.

remembered Bartletts.
