born June 12,1844, and served his
country three years in the War of the Rebellion, as a member of Co. D, 35th Regt.
Iowa Vol. Inf., and was in the battles of Vicksburg and Jackson, Miss., Spanish
Fort
and Mobile, Ala, and several others of less importance.
He
married at Liberty, Ia., Dec. 14, 1870, Mary V. Bogarth.
In
politics he was a Republican, in religious faith he was a Universalist.
He never recovered from the effects of the hardships and exposures of army life
and died of consumption.

and married at
Clarence, N.Y., Oct. 10, 1872, Rev. Edwin Ira
Bennett, who was born in
Bainbridge, N.Y., Dec. 6, 1832. He was of the Baptist denomination, and died
in Bainbridge, Aug. 4, 1878.
They had one child:

(2), Arthur (1) was born July 21,1836, and married in Clarence, N.Y., Jan.
12,
1865, Col. Israel Putnam Whitmer, of Goodrich, Mich. He was born in
Northumberland Co., Penn. She died in Goodrich., June 10, 1870.
They
had one child:

Aaron Wallace (8). He was in the clothing business
in 1887 at
Nashville, Mich. born May 11, 1869.
Catharine S. Whitmer
while on a visit to her old home in Clarence was
converted and
afterwards baptized by her former teacher and pastor . Rev. H. P.
Hunt. She united with the First Baptist Church of Clarence, and
there retained her
membership until she joined the church triumphant. Her remains were brought to
Clarence, and she sleeps with her kindred dead. he died in great peace, her last
wish being granted. It was
that her child should live with her father's family, and he
is the
only child in the home.*

Sept. 20, 1840, and married at Clarence,
N.Y., May 10, 1865.
Margaret Bratt Crego, who was born in Clarence, Dec.
8, 1842, and who
was a daughter of John and Charlotte (Goodrich) Crego.
He remained
upon the farm in Clarence until 1859, when he entered a mercantile
house in New York City, remaining there one year. He spent 1862 on
North
Manitou Island, Mich., teaching the first white school in the
place. Coming home
to Clarence he enlisted in the 198th N.Y. Inf.,
and received an honorable
discharge in 1865.
After his marriage he
removed to Hadley, Mich., and Feb. 1, 1867, engaged in
general
merchandising, remaining there four years, when he sold out his
business
and took a trip through the northwest with a view to locating
in a more healthful
climate, but returned and opened up a trade in
Nashville, Barry Co., Mich., a
thriving town on the M. C. R. R. The
business proving a success he remained,
except one year spent in
traveling, until his health compelled him to transfer the
business
to the management of his brother George.
In religious faith he and his
wife were Baptists. In politics he was a Republican.

Arthur (1) was born Jane 14,1844, and married at
Battle Creek,
Mich., Sept. 24, 1871, Harriet Matilda Burlingham, who was born
in
Ceresco, Mich., March 12, 1853. and who was a daughter of Roswell
and
Mary (Ogden) Burlingham. .
He remained on the farm in Clarence
till 1875, except one year spent in the
service with the 198th N.Y. Inf., from which he was honorably discharged January,
1865. In school
at the time his father lost his hand, he cheerfully returned home and
for many years in numberless ways he was his father's right hand.
In
1875 a
tendency to consumption made a change of climate necessary,
and he removed to
Middleville, Barry Co., Mich., and in 1880 he
removed to Nashville, Mich., to
take the place and business his
brother was obliged to leave on account of ill health.
He and
his wife were Baptists. In politics he was a Republican. In 1887 he
was
dwelling in Juniata, Adams Co., Neb., engaged in farming.

They removed immediately after their marriage to St. Paul, Minn., where he died
Nov. 9, 1872, and where
she was residing in 1884 at 464 Idlehart Street.
