was born March 20, 1820, entered the United States marine service in

1836, and during the first year was prostrated with rheumatism and disqualified for 
further service.  He married Dec. 20, 1853, Mary, born  Marengo. N. Y. , 
Oct. 30. 1826, daughter of Cyrus Whitney and Lydia (Sweet) Hatfield, and in 
the building of the Novelty Mills, at Avon, Fulton Co., Ill., lost his previously 
acquired property.  After this reverse he settled on a farm on Coal Creek, near 
Ellesville, Ill., where he erected a steam saw-mill and retrieved his fortune.

He married (2) Oct. 7, 1859, Eliza Jane, born in Sangamon Co., Ill., 
Oct. 22, 1826, daughter of Jacob and PoIly (Hooper) Coppenbarger,
of Newton Co., Mo., and dwelt on a farm between Neosho and Joplin, 
in the State of Missouri.  He is said to have discovered the Granby lead 
mine. Dwelling in the extreme south western part of Missouri during 
the civil war he suffered greatly by the destruction of his property, and 
went into the State of Kansas until peace was restored, when he then 
returned to his despoiled lands in Missouri.

and Olive Bolton Delley, and dwelt in Rochester, N. Y., where she died 
Feb. 29, 1844.

born Nov .20, 1817, and dwelt Edmeston until 1847, when they moved to 
Rochester, N. Y., and from thence in 1877 to Buffalo, N. Y., where they 
were still dwelling in 1879.

a cabinet maker and undertaker, born in New Berlin, N. Y., July 9, 1818, 
son of Eli and Jerusha Stetson Caulkins.  They dwelt first in Edmeston, 
N. Y., until 1846, then four years in Rochester, N. Y., after which they 
dwelt in Erie, Pa., where he died Sept. 3, 1860.

                          Bean, a journalist and printer, and dwelt in Cohoes,

June 1, 1814, married (1) Aurelia, daughter of Martin and Ruth (Ferris) 
Williams, Nov. 1, 1845, who died Jan. 1,1857, and dwelt in Henry, 
Marshall Co., Ill. He graduated M. D. at Cincinnati, 1850. 
  Their eldest and youngest children died in infancy, but

 *  Aaron Aylsworth is in possession of a gun said to have been brought 
over by  Arthur the immigrant. The statement has for its authority Arthur's 
grandson, Peleg (3), son of Chad (2), and grandfather of Aaron Aylsworth. 
It is also stated that this relic was used in the French and Indian War, and 
that it is a very effective implement still.

the war of 1812, and married (1) Laura Tucker, in 1816, in Utica, N. Y., 
who died Aug. 23, 1845.  After his second marriage he dwelt in Scott 
Tp., with post office at East Benton, Pa., where he died Nov. 11, 1869.

Arthur l)-- was a farmer, born Feb. 25, 1821, married Oct. .13, 1852, 
Sylinda. Greene, born May 9, 1833. in Clifford Pa., daughter of James 
and Susan (Westgate) Greene. They moved from the Tp. of Abingdon 
to Thompson, Susquehanna Co. Pa., in March, 1854, where they dwelt 
fourteen  years, when they moved to Carbondale, Pa.  In 1870 they 
located upon their farm and present home at Lennoxville, Pa. He has 
been assessor, school director, etc.

                         1880,  Laura Douglas.

   259.  ESTHER (5)-- Peleg (4), Peleg (3), Chad (2), Arthur (l)-- was 
born March 8, 1823, married June 19, 1849, at Waverly. Pa., Simeon 
Gumaer, a farmer,. born in Orange Co., N. Y., April 2, 1813, son of 
Jacob and Sarah (Vangorder) Gumer.  They dwelt in the Tp. of Benton, 
Lackawanna Co., Pa., where she died May 6, 1871, and he March 9, 
1879.

              ii   Daniel (6) b. Oct. 24, 1859, died Oct. 18, 1863.

   260.  WILLlS (5)-- David (4), Peleg (3), Chad (2), Arthur (1)-- was 
a farmer, carpenter and joiner, born Feb. 24, 1818, and married Aug. 8, 
1841, Mary Minerva Wilkinson, born Feb. 8. 1823, in Smithfield, R. I., 
daughter of James and Vienna (Sheldon) Wilkinson, of New Berlin, N. Y.
Leaving New York State they dwelt two years in York. Washington Co., 
Mich., and settled in 1845, in the Tp. of Cannon. Kent Go., Mich., then 
a primitive wilderness, where they were dwelling in 1879.

Personal Sketches                      

  Willis Aylsworth, a pioneer of Cannon Tp., was born in Chenango, Co., 
N. Y., Feb. 24. 1818.  His parents: David and Ada (Curtis) Aylesworth, 
were natives of Rhode Island and Connecticut. Mr. A.'s grandfather, Peleg 
Aylesworth., served through the American Revolution.  Mr. A., our 
subject. was reared on a farm and in early life learned the carpenter and 
joiner's trade, which he followed for 15 .years.  He came to Washtenaw 
county in 1843, and to Cannon in 1845, and located on section 22, where 
he owns 120 acres.  He was the second purchaser of this laud, which had 
no improvements.  Mr.  A. has cleared and finely improved 90 acres of it.  
He was married Aug.8, 1841, to Mary M. Wilkinson, a daughter of James 
and Vienna Wilkinson.  She was born in Smithfield, R. I., Feb. 7, 1823.  
They have one child, a daughter, Mary .M., born Feb. 6, 1845. wife of Wm. 
G. Little.  Mr. A. is Democratic in politics.  He still retains in his possession 
the farm that  he located in pioneer days.

                          Anna, b. Dec. 21, 1865; Willis Albert, Dec. 12, 1867; 
                          Elmer W., b. Apri16, 1870; Eva May, b. Jan. 5,1878.

   261.  LEONARD (5)-- David (4), Peleg (3), Chad (2), Arthur (1)-- 
a farmer, born June 21, 1822, married Nov. 5,1845, Harriet Rowley,
born Aug. 26, 1822, daughter of Seth and Jerusha (Thurston) Rowley, of 
New Lisbon, N.Y., and dwelt in the Tp.of New Berlin, on the Peleg 
Aylsworth homestead, where he met an accidental death Oct. 16, 1880.
A gun in his own hands was discharged into his chest, causing almost 
instant death. He was 58 years of age, an obliging neighbor, and unusually 
esteemed for his sterling integrity.

and dwelt on her father's homestead in the Tp. of New Berlin, with post 
office at Norwich, Chenango Co., N. Y.

  265.  WM. NELSON  (5) TOLES-- was a farmer, born April 9, 1820, 
married (1) March 11, 1842, Augusta Morse, who was born in the town 
of Spencer, Worcester Co., Mass., Aug. 5, 1813, and who died Jan. 11, 
1844, leaving an only child:

               i   William Lewis Toles (6). 

He dwelt in Morris, Otsego Co., N. Y., and married (2) Sept. 17, 1845, 
Hannah Celinda Matteson, sister to Catharine, who was born in Morris, 
N. Y., Jan. 12, 1816, where they were dwelling in 1879.

Oct.29, 1821, and married Aug. 4, 1859, Henry Hastings, a farmer, 
who was born in Milan, Duchess Co., N. Y., Sept. 2, 1812, and dwelt 
with post office near Gilbertsville, Otsego Co. , N. Y. 

  265b. MYRON WILSON (5) TOLES  --was a farmer, born April 2, 
1824, and married June 11, 1854, Catharine Abigail Matteson, sister to 
Hannah who was born March 14, 1829, and dwelt with post office at 
Gilbertville, N. Y.

E. Garey, who was born in Bainbridge, N. Y., Aug. 2, 1840. They 
dwelt with post office at Gilbertsville, N. Y., where he died Nov. 2, 
1874.

              ii   Carrie Amy (6) died previous to 1879. 

   265f.  EMMA JANE (5) TOLES -- was born Aug. 3, 1838, and 
married (1) Oct. 23, 1861, John Hastings, a farmer, born Aug. 26, 
1841, who became a soldier in the 152d Regt., N.Y. Vol., served 
trough the war, and died Aug 1, 1865.  Their home was near 
Gilbertsville. She married (2) June 15,1873, Daniel Kelsey, a farmer, 
who was born in Edmeston July 3, 1884, in which town they dwelt. 

  266. ANNA MARY (5) -- Philip (4) Peleg (8), Chad (2), Arthur (1) --
was born Aug. 18, 1834, and married in Menard Co.. Ill., John Henry 
Rowland, a farmer, who was born Feb. 20, 1828, at Marrow Bone, 
Cumberland Co., Ky., son of Wade Hampton and Winnifred (Murphy) 
Rowland, of that place.  He was a soldier in the 11th Illinois Cavalry, Jr 
under Major Wagoner and Col. Robert Ingersoll.  They dwelt at Babylon 
Mills, Fulton Co., Ill.

              ii   Emerson Leonard (6) b. Oct. 13, 1869. 
              iii   Elba Dayton (6) b. July 5, 1873. 

  267.  CHLOE HELEN (5) -- Philip (4), Peleg (3), Chad (2), Arthur, 
(1) -- was born July 8, 1837, and married in Fulton Co., Ill., Jan. 25, 
1855, William Ensley, a farmer, born June 12, 1828, in the State of Ohio, 
son of Christopher and Elizabeth (Gold) Ensley who were married in the 
State of Pennsylvania. They dwelt near Atterbury, Menard Co. Ill.

Arthur (1)-- was born April 26, 1844, and married Sept. 24, 1867, 
Eldridge, son or Lewis and Lydia (Howey) Keeling. 
  Lewis Keeling was born in Hardin County, Ky. and Lydia Howey in 
Washington County, Ky.  They both died in Sangamon County, Ill., he 
while a resident of Springfield.  He was a brick maker. 
  They were dwelling, 1882, at Wyoming, Stark Co., Ill.

              ii   Christina (6) b. Oct. 8, 1869.
