" Elizabeth Stanton, who married John Fordyce,
was supposed to be a widow,
on account of John's long absence during the Revolutionary war; News being
prevalent that John was dead. She therefore married (2) - Porter, by whom
she
had two children, viz.: Anna, and a son, who died young. Anna married Daniel
Rust, who was Lorenzo Dow's mother's brother. At the close of the war John
Fordyce returned and in a conference with Porter, mutually agreed to let Elizabeth
choose whic
husband she would live with, whereupon she chose John Fordyce."
The above account of the Fordyces is from a memorandum in pencil in the
hand of Nathaniel Fordyce Stone, and written certainly after 1861.
Concerning the disappearance of John Fordyce
the following additional
statement is pertinent. He is said to have been a Tory and in fear of his life on
that
account. He went out of his house into his yard to get an armful of wood,
and became frightened
at some movements in the vicinity, and skulked away
into the dense woods and made his
way back to Nova Scotia, where he remained
in seclusion until after the war
closed. Being something of a wag, when he
returned he made his appearance at his house with

And after many rolling years have passed,
And my own head is sprinkled o'er with gray,
I stand beside thy humble grave at last,
And here the tribute of my tears I pay
And if to look upon thy grave and weep
Was so to be desired and sought so far,
Then what will be the bliss in heaven I'll reap,
To see thee, saint, in Jesus' crown a star!
