June, 1812, married (1) Oct. 8, 1815, Charlotte Brown, of  Southbury, Conn., who died
      Oct. 20, 1818; married (2) Jan. 1, 1822, Polly, born Nov. 19, 1799, daughter of Abel
and Mary (Hawley) De Forest, of Edmeston, N. Y ., moved to Utica, N. Y., July, 1828,
where he died suddenly of heart disease, Feb. 18,1857, whi1e answering the ca1l of his
door-be1l.  He was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Utica, and thoroughly
interested in every good Page 149 cause prudent in his undertakings and frugal in his expenditures.
but generous in his charities.  His in the family history is the subject of a special chapter
devoted to his AYLSWORTH REGISTER. [See the first pages of this work, where he is
given credit for the first history of this family.] She died in Binghampton, N. Y., Sept. 7,
1876, and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica.

      Children of Sylvester and Polly.

                  i   Francis Henry (6) b. March 20,1823, died Sept. 26, 1828.
                  ii   Mary (6) b. April 8, 1825, unmarried, died Sept. 28, 1847, at Utica.
                 iii   William Henry (6) b. Sept. 20, 1829, died June 19.1832.
iv   Charles (6) b. July 25, 1832, became a partner with his father in the

hardware business in Utica when twenty-one years of age, which business
was closed in 1846. After his father's death he was clerk in New York city
until 1862, when he enlisted in the Fifth Regiment of  N. Y. Cavalry, Col.
De Forest, and after his death, Col. Wyndham, commanding.  He refused
a lieutenancy, preferring his position as clerk to his colonel to the more active
and fatiguing duties of the campaign.  His health was always delicate, and a
considerable portion of his army life was spent in the hospital.  After the close
of the war he returned to the city of New York, but in December, 1870, he
went to Binghamton, N. Y., evidently sinking with consumption, but with the
change of air and scenery, together with the devoted nursing of his estimable
mother and her relatives, his life did not go out until Dec. 15, 1875.  At the
time of his death his mother was gradually sinking with the same disease, and
died the following September, being accompanied to their last resting place by
his devoted aunt, Miss Caroline De Forest, who, after the death of his mother
-- her sister -- purchased a lot in Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica, and accomplished
the melancholy task of removing the remains of the father and the six children
from the old cemetery, who now lie buried with the mother in Forest Hill. Miss
Caroline De Forest regarded the measure as a sad duty, on account of the
wretched condition of the old cemetery.

iv   James De Forest (6) b.Nov.1,1835, died May 21,1839.
                  vi   Cornelia (6) b. June 29, 1838, died April 3, 1839.

With the death of Charles Aylsworth, the family of Sylvester became extinct.

have not been able to learn that his relatives had any definite knowledge of his death.  The river
