  81.  JOSEPH (5) -- Joseph (4). Robert (3), Robert (2). Arthur (1) -- was born 
June 14, 1775-6, in West Greenwich, R. I., and married, Oct. 25, 1796, Lucy 
Haynes, daughter of Elder Aaron Haynes,* of Hoosick, N. Y. He was a farmer, 
and dwelt in Fairfax. Vt., where he died June 11, 1857. He was a soldier in the 
ar or 1812, and was the captain of a rifle company about the year 1825. His wife 
was born Sept. 20, 1777, and died Jan. 22, 1846.

   Aaron Haynes, son of Jonathan and Ruth Haynes, was born at Bennington, Vt. 
The Christian name of his wife was Mary. 
   Dr. Asher Armstrong. son of Bela Armstrong, who was born Feb. 8, 17T6, married 
Mollie Haynes, daughter of Rev. Aaron Haynes, of Hoosick. She was born at. Benn-
ington, Vt. Dec. 12, 1779.
   Dr. Prosper M.. Armstrong son of Asher and Mollie Armstrong, was born in Hoos- 
ick, Aug. 11, 1802 . J. P. Armstrong, another son, was born Aug. 29, 1817. He was 
postmaster at Hoosick for many years.

  Joseph Ellsworth, in the spring of 1803, moved from Litchfield, N.Y.
into northern Vermont, and settled in the town of Fletcher, on land 
\owned by Aaron Haynes, who at that time owned large tracts of land 
in what is now known as the counties of Franklin, Chitenden and 
Lamoile. At this time the country was quite new, there being but few 
families in town.  For a few years they suffered the privitations inci-
dent upon first settlers, and at the time known as the "cold season," it 
being impossible to raise grain, his courage failed and was on the point 
of moving his family back to New York, when his wife's father (Aaron 
Haynes) came up and thinking it better for him to raise his family in a 
new country furnished provisions and a team which helped them to a 
start.  After this they prospered and soon had the rich lands converted 
into smooth, productive fields, all enclosed with the old-time stone wall 
which is still standing as a memorial of the strength and persevering 
energy of the first settlers. 
  For a few years the nearest market was nearly a hundred miles off, 
and all the pork and grain to spare were taken that distance with a 
team to be exchanged for needful supplies for the family. A large farm 
house was built and, for those times, well furnished, whose doors were 
ever opened to rich or poor alike, who ever found a welcome beneath 
its hospitable roof. 
  In 1814, while at work with his boys in the hay field, news came of 
the advance of the British upon Plattsburg. Only stopping long enough 
for a slight change of clothing, he set out on foot for the scene of action, 
where he met with the misfortune of a broken limb, but succeeded in 
capturing a British gun, which still remains in the family. 
  His sons and daughters, all except the youngest, settled within a few 
miles and built up good homes and fortunes for themselves. The 
youngest, Prosper, went back near the old home his father left, and 
there became a successful farmer. 
  Of this branch of the family a few have represented their town in the 
legislature, and some have filled the office of selectmen of the town in 
which they lived, but as a people have rather avoided office. It is not 
known that any member of the different families have ever been indict- 
ed for any crime, or been the recipient of public charity.

Julia Delano, who was born Dec. 23, 1784, and dwelt in Litchfield, Her-
kimer Co., N. Y., where he died Sept. 3, 1861, and she Oct. 6,1858. 
"He was a soldier in the War of 1812."

dier in the War of 1812.

was born March 17,1793. in Hoosick, N. Y., and married Hannah Mat- 
teson, who was born June 4, 1798, and dwelt in Cedarville. Herkimer  
Co, N. Y., where she died Sept. 20,1842. He afterwards married Mrs. 
Betsey Elizabeth Tilson, and died at Lone Rock, Wis., Feb. 15, 1879. 
He was a soldier in the War of 1812.

Isaac Oderkirk, perhaps in Hoosick, N. Y. They moved to Clay, On- 
ondaga Co, N. Y., and thence in 1847 to Fond du Lac Co., Wis., where 
she died in 1859.   The ancestors of the Oderkirks were from Holland.

married Joshua Ball, a farmer, who was born in the month of August, 
1781, in the State of New Hampshire. They dwelt in the town of 
Litchfield, Herkimer Co., N. Y., where she died in the month of January, 
about the year 1822.

Leroy Fowler, and in 1882 was dwelling in the State of Illinois.    

  87.  ELIZABETH (5) -- Benjamin (4), Philip (3), Arthur (2), Arthur (1) --
was born in Rhode Island Dec. 17,1750, married Benjamin John- 
son* about 1778, perhaps in the vicinity of Niskayuna, N. Y ., moved 
about ten years afterwards to Washington Co., Va., and settled in the 
vicinity of the present site of Saltsville, where she died in 1830. He 
returned to the State of New York, where he probably died. They ;
were in Washington Co., Va. , before Oct. 17, 1790.

Benjamin Johnson may have been a son of John Johnson, whose will was made 
July 14, 1772, and proved Sept. 2, 1782, In Coventry, R. I. The will mentions his 
wife, Sarah, sons, Benjamin, John, Joseph, Jonathan, and Obadiah, and daughters, 
Elizabeth Hill, and Mehetable Straight.

He married (2) July 26, 1807, Mary, widow of James Henry, and died 
May 8,1825, and was buried at Ballston, N. Y.

perhaps in Pownal, Vt., and removed to Milford, Otsego Co., N. Y ., 
where he died, probably about 1810, and from which place the widow 
removed with her children in 1815, to either Ashland or Wayne Co., 
Ohio, or perhaps near the line dividing these two counties, where she died.

            Lydia and Electa Russell were sisters.

married David Arnold.  They dwelt in the vicinity of New Woodstock 
or Cazenovia, N. Y ., where they probably died. 
  They are said to have had quite a large family, a definite account of 
which has not been obtained, though much effort has been made to get 
it.  The names of their children, that have been suggested, are as follows:

was born about 1765, and married at the age of nineteen years, John 
Bowdish, who was a son of Abram and Hannah Bowdish, of New Lisbon, 
Otsego Co., N.Y.* . 
  They moved from Pittstown, Rensselaer Co., N. Y ., to Milford, N. Y ., 
and dwelt there probably until they died.

  *Abram Bowdish lived to the age of 98 years, and his wife to the age or 93 years. 
Their son, Asa Bowish. m. Lucy Sweet, and had a son, John Reynolds Bowdish, who 
m, Lydia .Johnson.  These last had a son, William Sweet Bowdish, who became a
Methodist preacher, and m. Miss Stanton. William S Bowdish had five sons, who 
became Methodist preachers.

96. SALLY (5) -- Philip (4), Philip (3), Arthur (2), Arthur (1) -- was 
born about 1785, and married Rufus Harrington,*   who was born about 1777. 
  They settled about four miles from the village of  Laurens, and about 
three from Mount Vision P. 0. (Jacksonville) on the west side of Otego 
Creek, in Otsego Co., N. Y.  There Was a family cemetery on their 
farm.  They removed a short distance into the town of New Lisbon,

97. JOHN (5) -- John (4), Philip (3), Arthur (2). Arthur (1) -- was 
born in Rhode Island, probably in Coventry, and about 1761, two or 
three months after his father's accidental death by drowning, and married 
at the age of nineteen years Lucy Dean, who was born in Connecticut, 
probably in Killingly. and who was sixteen years of age at the  Page 117 time of
their marriage. Her father, Tisdell Dean, was accidentally killed in a 
saw-mill when she was a little girl and his children were " put out." John (5) 
was a shoemaker, and their two eldest children were born in the State 
of New Hampshire, perhaps in the vicinity of Claremont,* where they may 
have been married, and where some of the Deans lived.  It is thought by 
some that his mother dwelt there also. 
  One year after their return to Killingly, Conn., Anna, who was either
her mother or his mother, made a journey to Killingly on horseback, 
taking with her on her return their eldest daughter, Anna. 
  The family left Killingly, probably in 1800, and settled in the town of 
Granville, Washington Co , N. Y., very near the State line, and after a 
residence there of about ten years they removed to Northampton, 
Montgomery Co., N. Y, where they afterwards dwelt. 
  She died of pleurisy in 1832; he lived some eight or ten years after 
her decease.

1804; it names five daughters, Elizabeth Mowrey, wife of Andrew; 
Sarah Bennett, wife of Josiah; Hannah Weaver, wife or Reuben; Mary
Preston, wife of Daniel; Abigail Griffith, wife of Southward; and two

to Wheeling, Va., where they purchased a boat and proceeded down the
Ohio River to the mouth of Green River, where they landed on the Indiana
side, just above where Evansville now stands. From this locality
he moved to Warrick Co., Ind., and thence, about 1840, to vicinity of
Bloomfield, Stoddard Co., Mo., where he died about 1854.  His first
wife died in Indiana probably, where he married Elizabeth Parker, his
second wife and she died  Nov. 8, 1874. He was a farmer and miller .

was born May 5, 1783, in West Greenwich, R. I., and sometime after
settled in some part of the State of Ohio, where he is said to have married, 
but the location of his home has not yet been ascertained. Ruth Parker Matthews, 
daughter of his brother Aaron, said he visited her father's home when she was six 
years of age, and that she always understood that his home was in Ohio.

  106. GEORGE (5) -- David (4), David (3). Arthur (2), Arthur (1) --
was born Aug. 7, 1785, and went to Vanderburgh Co., Ind.. with his 
brother Aaron, and there died, as did also three of his children. His 
wife was Ann (Fuller), and two of her daughters moved to Spencer Co.,
Ind., where the mother died.

Abington, Pa. Silas Mercer Parker, b. Sep. 10, 1785, son of George Parker, 
who dwelt near Lake Champlain, and 1eaving the vicinity of Carbondale, Pa, 
in 1816, accompanied her brothers Aaron and George to the southwestern part 
of Indiana, and dwelt at Parker's Settlement, Posey Co., where she died,
after which the family removed to Williamson Co. Ill., near Attila P.O.
He died 1870 and is buried at Somers Church, (from tombstone) Corinth 
Township, Williamson Co., Ill.
  It is said they had a family of seven children, and that two died in Indiana, 
but accounts have been so indefinite or conflicting. that the three last names 
in the following list should not be unqualifiedly received :

    and skirmishes his regiment was in up to May 24,
    1862, when his horse was shot in Banks' retreat in the
    Shenandoah Valley, falling upon him and breaking
    his hip. He was paroled Nov. 1, having been confined
    in the meantime in Old Libby and Belle Isle prisons, 
    and returning home was married Nov .30th, 
    remaining at home but one week, so soon was he 
    exchanged, and returned to his regiment, and remained
    with it until April 1, when he was again taken prisoner 
    and exchanged three weeks thereafter from Libby
    prison. On June 3d, following, he was again taken
    prisoner, and using his own words: ..But after drop-
    ping my guard and borrowing his horse, I took to the !
    mountains, and by the help of the negroes and a white
    lady - Mrs. Smith - formerly of Arlington, as I after-
    wards learned, then a resident of Dramsville, Va., was
    enabled by three nights' travel, to make my way into
    the Union lines." From this time he remained with
    his regiment until discharged, Dec. 1864, at Benning-

born May 1, 1785, in Arlington, Vt., and married Nov. 19, 1807, Sally
Leet, who was born April 28, 1786, in Woolcott, Conn., and who was a
daughter of Luther and Sybil (Plumb) Leet, of Arlington. He was a
physician and surgeon, and dwelt in Arlington, where he died March
25, 1838, and she Oct. 19, 1871.

          v   Laura Miner (6) b. Feb. 11, 1821, died Oct. 11, 1822.

  111. LAURA  (5) -- Abel (4), Judiah (3), Arthur. (2), Arthur (1) --
was born about 1789, and married Captain William Miner. They dwelt
at Genoa, Cayuga Co., N. Y ., where she died in May, 1824, leaving a
son two years old and a daughter four weeks old, viz. :
           i   William (6) m.......... Avery; dw. in Genoa, where he died,
                     leaving several children who still probably dwell there.
           ii   Laura (6) died about 1852, a. highly accomplished lady.

Was born about 1793, married Ebenezer Lester, of Scipio, N. Y., and 
lived in Fredonia, N. Y., where she died probably in 1835. 

Children.

           i    Helen (6) m. ; dw. Westfield, N. Y., no issue.
           ii   Henry (6) m. Mrs. Electa (Baker) Miller, dau, of Silas and
                     Ann (Barney) Baker, and grand-dau. of Daniel and Polly
                    (Aylsworth) Barney. They dwelt in Avon. N. Y.; no issue.
          iii   George (6) deceased.
          iv   Laura Aylsworth .(6) deceased.
           v   William (6)

  113. ROSA (5) -- Judiah (4). Judiah (3), Arthur (2), Arthur (1) --
was born in Rhode Island March 15,1781, [W. G. Rec.] and married in
Ross Co.. O., Dexter Higbee. She died in 1819.
  As near as can be ascertained their family of children were :


 i   Mary (6) m Dawson.
 ii   Phebe Stafford '(6) m. Dr. J. Mills.
iii   Laura Maria (6) m Dr. Edwin Smith,
iv   Judiah Ellworth (6) said to have dwelt in Richmond Dale,
           Ross Co.. O., up to 1850 with a family.
 v   Sylvester (6) said to have lived on the Sciota River
vi   Orlando (6)

  114. SYLVESTER (5) -- Judiah (4), Judiah (3), Arthur (2), Arthur (1) --
was born about 1792. and married Elizabeth Harwick, of Minden,
N. Y ., where they dwelt until the Autumn of 1814, when they went to
the town of Richmond, Ross Co , Ohio, where his health failed, and
from which locality the family returned a short time before his death to
the State of New York in a lumber wagon. staying a few weeks perhaps
with relatives in Chautaugua Co., N. Y ..and four weeks with relatives
in Penn Yan, N. Y.  He died at the residence of his uncle, Frederick,
in Saratoga, N. Y ..Oct. 5. 1824, where he lies buried. She died in1863.
